David Clifton

Principal & Solicitor

David joined the firm in 2000 and became a Partner in May 2003 then Principal in March 2013 when the previous firm dissolved to become Clifton Legal. Prior to joining the firm, David had twenty-five years’ experience in business. He was a member of the inaugural Board of the Tamworth Development Corporation. He and his family have been residents of Armidale since 1993.

David practices predominantly in the fields of business and local government law, family law, criminal law, general dispute resolution, conveyancing, wills and estates. He is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management. David holds a current appointment by the New South Wales Roads and Maritime Services ("RMS") to manage road transport prosecutions for the New England and Northwest region from Tenterfield to Tamworth and Quirindi and West to Inverell. In this role he has had extensive experience in managing prosecutions, including contested hearings, in the local courts in the area on behalf of the RMS.

Clifton Legal have the contract to provide legal services to Armidale Regional Council and during the term of the contract, David has been the principal contact with the Council. He is a member of Armidale Rotary Club, having recently completed a term as President and is involved with the Armidale Chamber of Commerce, New England Regional Art Museum and is the President of New England Rugby.

David is married to Toni and they have 3 adult children and 5 grandchildren.

Scott Waterson


Scott joined the firm in 2013 as a Law Clerk while completing his studies, and has been a solicitor with Clifton Legal since his admission to practise in 2014 save for a short time with Armidale Regional Council.

Scott brings extensive commercial experience to our firm, having been a licensed real estate agent for nearly 20 years, owning and operating his own agency for 10 years. Having sold that business, Scott undertook his law studies at UNE while operating a small hospitality business.

With strong ties to the Armidale community, and a commitment to the country lifestyle, Scott has a special interest in small business, real property, commercial leasing and sales, and commercial law and wills and estates.

Scott is passionate about his rugby, and has been an executive member of New England Rugby Union for a number of years, as well as being actively involved in local cricket as a player and with junior representative teams. Scott is also a member of the executive of St Albert’s College (UNE) Senior Common Room and takes an active role in mentoring and providing academic assistance to the student body. Scott has coached the St Albert’s Rugby Club First Grade Team for the past 2 years.

Geordie Marchant


Geordie is a proud New Englander having grown up in Armidale, attending Newling Primary School and The Armidale School.

Geordie studied at Newcastle University after completing his HSC attaining a Bachelor of Arts and whilst studying worked largely in customer service and facilities management. The latter position involved contracts with NSW Department of Housing, NSW Schools, NSW Police, ANZ Bank and Vodaphone.

Returning to Armidale in 2009, Geordie lived and worked at The Armidale School as a duty master where he was involved with boarding, cadets, rugby and cricket. He was encouraged to and considered a career in teaching but the law had always been attractive to him.

Geordie commenced a Law degree with the University of New England in 2013.

Geordie worked at the UNE Future Students Team whilst studying, completing his Bachelor of Laws in 2017. His Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice at Australian National University was interrupted when he was diagnosed with lymphoma. On completion of his treatment, he also completed his Graduate Study in 2019. After undertaking his legal placement with Clifton legal upon being admitted to the Supreme Court rolls he has accepted an offer as solicitor in 2020.

Geordie has strong ties with the Armidale Blues Rugby Club having been Club and First Grade Captain, winning Premierships in 2010, 2013 and 2015.

Laura Elliott

Administrative Assistant & Bookkeeper

Laura recently joined our team bringing with her over 20 years clerical experience, 11 of which were in the legal industry. She has a wealth of conveyancing experience which she has adapted to the PEXA digital conveyancing system.

Hailing originally from New Zealand, Laura and her husband and 2 young children have lived in Armidale since 2015.

Robyn Lancaster

Administrative Assistant

Robyn joined us in early 2018 following over 18 years undertaking conveyancing work with another local law firm and is a lifelong resident of Armidale.

Robyn has successfully adapted her extensive conveyancing experience to the PEXA digital conveyancing platform and is an extremely valuable member of our team.
